The Rector of the University of Algiers 1 inaugurates the molecular genetics research
laboratory at Mustafa Pasha University Hospital
On Sunday, March 3, 2024, the Rector of the University of Algiers 1, Professor Fares
Mokhtari, has inaugurated the molecular genetics research laboratory in the Department of
Cardiology at Mustafa Pasha University Hospital, in the presence the Vice-Rectors, the Deans
of the Faculties and their deputies, as well as the Director General of the hospital, the
President of the Scientific Council and the Heads of Departments at the hospital.
In his opening speech, Professor Fares Mokhtari, has praised the efforts made by the
university in promoting scientific research, particularly in the field of medicine, pointing out
the importance of this new laboratory, which will contribute significantly to improve medical
services, by accurately diagnosing heart diseases and preventing sudden cardiac death. He has
also added that the laboratory will facilitate the access to health care within the country,
which will reduce treatment costs for citizens.
This laboratory is considered the first of its kind at the national level. It aims at preventing
sudden death caused by cardiac arrhythmia thanks to early diagnosis and targeted

interventions by identifying genetic mutations, family screening, and personal prevention
strategies. In addition, the laboratory will perform several research tasks, including
understanding disease mechanisms, discovering new therapeutic targets, and improving
diagnostic tools in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms and
develop new treatment strategies.
