The University Library was created in 1879.

Originally boasting 40 000 books, its holdings by 1959 included 500 000 books and 1275 periodicals.
It was one of the main targets of the colonialist Secret Army Organization (“OAS”), which on June 7th, 1962, on the eve of Algeria’s independence, set it on fire, causing the destruction of 200 000 books.
In December, 1962, an international committee (C.I.R.B.U.A.) was established, whose mission was to restore and reconstitute this University Library. After 6 years’ unrelenting efforts to this end, on April 12th, 1968 , the Library was reopened.
The Library has relations with all the national and international scientific and cultural institutions.
It operates under the management of a Central Curator, who secures coordination with the libraries of the various departments of the University of Algiers .
