The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Algiers hosts over 15 000 students registered at undergraduate and graduate level in its three Departments : Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery.
The Faculty’s constant striving has consisted in providing the best services in terms of national health needs.. This mission is discharged with the assistance of 04 university hospitals, 11 specialized hospital structures, and 07 health centres of the Algiers and neighboring willayat (provinces).
The teaching, in French, is carried out by over 1000 tenured teachers. This has made this Faculty the major medical school in Algeria .
You will find hereafter a historical survey concerning this Faculty and a description of its structure and of the course contents of its various departments .

Historical Survey
The Faculty of Medicine’s activities date back to the beginning of the colonial period as indicated in detail under the Historical Survey section of the Site of this University.
Under a Decree issued as early as the 4th of August, 1857 , the Preparatory School of Medicine and Pharmacy was established, to be developed , through the Law of December 20th, 1879 , into the School of Medicine and Pharmacy.
The total of students registered in this School in the year 1886/1887 was 278. By 1930, the School boasted 327 students of medicine and 222 of pharmacy.
The growth of this school has been constant ever since through the increase in the number of chairs and the creation of additional institutes :
in 1959, it counted 35 chairs;
among the new Institutes created were the Institute of Overseas Health and Medicine, established in 1923 and the Trachoma and Ophthalmology Institute, established in 1947.
It is also worth mentioning that Professor A.LAVERAN (1845-1922), a French military Surgeon who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine, had been a student in Algeria , where he made research on malaria and its agents.
Following Algeria ’s independence in 1962, this medical school experienced a speedy development, particularly following the Reform of Higher Education that took place in 1971.
Furthermore, the democratization of access to education generated a constant increase in the number of its students, currently exceeding 15000.
The Campuses where the teaching and research carried out by the Faculty’s three Departments are spread over the City of Algiers and its outskirts, including the
Central University Structure (Faculty Centrale), the Maherzi Campus, the associated hospitals and medical centres….
The Structure of the Faculty :
The Faculty of Medical Sciences is a public, scientific institution subservient to the University of Algiers and placed under the aegis of the Ministry of |Higher Education and Scientific Research.
It is directed by a DEAN, who is nominated by Decree following a proposal of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. He heads the staff hierarchy of the Faculty. He manages the Faculty budget.
He is assisted by :
Deputy-Director for Administrative and Financial Matters ;
Deputy-Director for Pedagogy and Research;
the Head of the Faculty’s Library .
Biomedical Core Courses (established under Ministerial Law No. 223 of 29/11/1994 ):
The core curriculum for students of medicine and dental surgery includes the following subjects : chemistry, biochemistry, medical physiology, biology I and II, mathematics, terminology.
