Historical  Survey

      The  Faculty of Medicine’s activities date back to the beginning  of the colonial period  as indicated in detail under the   Historical  Survey section of the  Site of this University.

       Under  a Decree issued as early as the 4th of August, 1857 ,  the Preparatory School of  Medicine and Pharmacy was established, to be developed , through  the Law of December 20th, 1879 , into the School of Medicine and Pharmacy.

      The total of students registered in this School in  the year 1886/1887 was 278. By 1930, the School boasted 327 students of medicine and 222 of pharmacy.

      The growth of this school has been constant ever since through the increase in the number of chairs and the creation of  additional institutes :

  • in 1959, it counted 35 chairs;

  • among the new Institutes created were the Institute of Overseas Health and  Medicine, established in  1923 and the Trachoma and Ophthalmology Institute, established in 1947.

      It is also worth mentioning that Professor A.LAVERAN (1845-1922), a French military Surgeon who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine, had been a student in Algeria , where he made research on  malaria and its agents.

      Following Algeria ’s  independence in 1962,  this medical school experienced  a  speedy development, particularly following the Reform of Higher Education that took place in 1971.

      Furthermore,  the democratization of access to education generated a constant increase in the number of its students, currently exceeding 15000.

      The Campuses where the teaching  and research carried out by the Faculty’s three Departments  are spread over the City of Algiers and its outskirts,  including the

Central University Structure  (Faculty Centrale), the Maherzi  Campus, the associated hospitals and medical centres….
