THE UNIVERSITY OF ALGIERS… ITS ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURINGS ALONG THE YEARS

The University of Algiers experienced its first division in 1967, when its Oran Extension was raised to the level of a university. A second division took place in 1968, when the Constantine Extension was promoted as a University.

A third division was operated in 1978, when the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Algiers was promoted to become the University of Sciences and Technology, before it was named Houari Boumediene University.

The University underwent a fourth division following the setting up of the new university map in 1984, the year when a number of higher schools and institutes, such as the Higher School of Commerce, the Agricultural Institute, the University of Continuing Education, the Higher School of Medical Sciences, the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, etc…, were organized outside the University of Algiers.

A fifth division took place in 2007, when the Ghardaia and Tamanrasset Extensions were promoted as University Centres.

The sixth division was effected in October 2009 as part of a restructuring of the University of Algiers, now henceforth comprising the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences. Under this division, two new universities have been created: the University of Bouzaréah, consisting of the Faculty of Letters and Languages, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Archaeology, and the University of Dély Ibrahim, comprising the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, the Faculty of Political and Information Sciences and the Institute of Physical and Sports Education.

It is worth noting that all the universities, schools and institutes stemming from the University of Algiers have within a very short time become academic institutions of excellent scientific standing. Indeed, the aim of each restructuring has been to ensure a better command of the management of students' academic, scientific, and administrative affairs, as well as of the affairs of University users.
