Historical sketch :

      Translation was included in academic teaching at the U. of Algiers as early as 1964, as part of the then faculty of Letters and Humanities. This teaching progressively developed through the years, to integrate conference interpreting.

      Under  Decree 73-139 of  09/08/1973 , translation and interpretation  were managed by an  Institute of Translation and Interpretation.

     As a result of Decree 98-253 of  17 August,  1998 , this  Institute became one of the  Departments of the new  Faculty of  Letters and et Languages.

THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

1)      Modules  taught during the 04 years :

• Written expression in Arabic as initial language  ( L1) and in the two other languages.

• Oral expression in the target (L2) and the 2^nd (L3) languages

1st Year :

Initiation to translation  from and into L1, L2 and L3 ; general culture  ; general linguistics  ; Arab- Islamic civilization ; world culture  ; social sciences .

2^nd Year :

Introduction to interpreting from  and into L1, L2  and  L3 ; general culture ; introduction to the history of  Algeria , to law and to informatics.

3rd Year :

Translation theory ; translation methods ; interpreting and translation from and into L1, L2 and  L3. Internship.

4th Year :

a)      Specialization : written translation:

• Translation from and into L1, L2  and  L3 ;

• Translation from and into L1,  L2 and  L3.

b)      Specialization : interpreting;

• Interpretation from and into  L1,L2, and L3;

• Interpretation from  L2 to  L3;

• Consecutive interpretation: same pattern;

• Internship.
