Mohamed Bencheneb International Colloquium

As part of the celebration of the centennial of the University of Algiers
Preamble
Mohamed Bencheneb was born at Ain Dehab, wilaya (province) of Médéa, on 26 October, 1869. Following excellent primary studies in Arabic an French, he attended the Teachers' College in Algiers, then taught at the Constantine Ethaalibia School, before becomin a Professor at the University of Algiers.
A most cultured, remarkably erudite scholar, he was the first Algerian to hold a Doctorate under the French occupation of Algeria, and the first Algerian to become a member of the Damascus Arabic Language Academy. He was member of scientific councils of prestigious international institutes. He has left a rich and varied correspondence with scholars and Orientalists of renoun.
He published Onwan eddiraya by El Ghobrini and Rihlat El wartilani and Nefh el azhar of the poet Abderrahmane el Mahdgoub. He had perfect knowledge of several languages, in particular French, English, Spanish, and Turkish.
In celebrating the centennial of the U. of Algiers, the Department of Arabic Language and Letters proposes to hold a Colloquium devoted to the thinking and achievements of this academic personality. The axes of research of the Colloquium under this Call for papers are:
· Bencheneb- biography and scientific carreer.
· Bencheneb and Orientalism.
· Bencheneb and the Arab Cultural legacy.
· Bencheneb and Linguistic studies.
· Bencheneb's translations and comparative studies.
· Bencheneb and cultural life in Algeria and in the Maghreb.
· Bencheneb founder of popular culture studies.

- Presentations will be in Arabic, French, and English.
- Deadline for reception of titles and abstracts of presentations: 04/15/2009.
-Deadline for reception of papers: 06/30/2009.
