"The Current World Financial Crisis and its Repercussions on the Economies of the MENA Countries"

The mortgage crisis which started in the USA and grew into a financial one on a world scale has begun to spread to the real economy announcing a cycle of recession of the world economy which, some, consider as serious as the big crash of 1929.

This crisis made some analysts question the performance of the world economy as well as that of the US economy. From here came the initiative to reconsider the foundations of the world financial system in order to improve its transparency, stability, governance and responsibility.

On the other hand, the losses witnessed lately in the financial markets has led some to think of  sovereignty funds, of which part is detained by the economies of the MENA region, as a means of regulation of liquidity in the world financial system, and of emerging economies as a way to compensate the regressing growth in the industrialized economies.

Given its importance as a major supplier of energy on the world market, the MENA region is open to the influences of financial crises. The region also holds many of the sovereignty funds operating in the markets of industrialized economies, in addition to being an important market for the goods produced in these economies. Furthermore, some of the countries of the region have experienced high unemployment levels, shortage of water resources, besides being dependant on foreign direct investment in achieving economic growth.

All these factors constitute a basis for identifying the channels through which the effects of the current World financial crisis are transmitted to the region. They also lead us to put forward the following question:

What are the challenges facing the world economy in confronting this financial crisis and its extensions to the MENA region?

Axes:

Axis1: The current financial crisis: Theoretical approaches and attempts to explain.

Axis2: Channels of transmission of the current financial crisis to the MENA economies.

Axis 3: Repercussions of the current financial crisis on the economic variables in MENA countries (stability, employment, investment, consumption, equilibrium; etc…).

Axis 4: The contribution of the MENA countries in formulating solutions to the current financial crisis.

Conditions for participation:

       Participants should comply with the following conditions:

1)       Fill in the application form.

2)       The languages to be used are Arabic, French, and English.

3)       The proposal for participation should not have been used elsewhere.

4)       The number of pages should not exceed 15 pages including references and appendices.

5)       The following writing criteria should be respected:

-          Simplified Arabic Word, character 14 for the main text, character 12 for footnotes, and double space for proposals written in Arabic.

-          Time New Romans, character 12 for the main text, character 10 for footnotes, and 1.5 for spacing for proposals written in French and English.

      Dates:

-          The conference will take place during the period of 7-8 December 2009.

-          The deadline for accepting proposals is fixed for 31 July 2009.

-          The decision of the scientific committee is sent not later than 17 September 2009.

Remarks:

-          In the case of a contribution being accepted, the faculty covers hotel expenses for one participant only (for contributions of more than one author).

-          An Airway ticket will be provided for one participant only (for contributions of more than one author) from outside Algeria.
